Bert Ambrose (although he was known as just Ambrose throughout his entire career) formed his first band in 1920 at the Embassy Club in London and later worked in America. It was a feature of Ambroses orchestra that he incorporate a large number of American musicians, and this combination allowed his music to contain influences from both sides of the Atlantic.
His heyday was the mid to late 1930s, during which time he registered eight American hits, whilst his live performances at the Embassy Club (he was to enjoy three lengthy spells at the venue) and the Mayfair Hotel were seldom less than outstanding.

This CD, one of three in this particular range, features one of the most influential jazz singers of the 20th century - Ella Fitzgerald. Gifted with a three-octave voice, Ella became noted for her tonal purity, virtually faultless phrasing and intonation and her improvisational scat singing.
Whilst the notion of taking classic American songs and producing a songbook has become very much in vogue over the last five or so years, it was Ella Fitzgerald who popularised the idea, beginning in 1956 with her album of Cole Porter songs. She would later bring the Midas touch to similar albums of material by Rodgers & Hart, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern and Johnny Mercer. Born Hiram Williams on September 17th, 1923 in Alabama he was given a guitar by his mother when he was aged seven and was taught to play by local bluesman Rufe Tee-tot Payne. As well as the blues Hank also got an early exposure to both gospel and country music and by his early 20s was playing regularly on the local dance-hall circuit. His tempestuous marriage to Audrey Sheppard in 1944 would later provide him with ample material for songs, with Williams being credited with virtually inventing the cant live with them, cant live without them school of songwriting. He signed his first recording contract in 1949, recording his first major hit the following year and, over the course of the next four years became one of country musics biggest stars. By the time of his death, on New Years Day 1953, from a combination of pills and alcohol, some felt his career on the slide following his divorce, firing from the Opry and sacking of his backing band. His reputation has risen above this slide and now Hank Williams is rightfully afforded the stature of a country music legend. Kijkwijzer:
